Metropolitan College is the rebrand from the historic Glasgow College: Glasgow College Of Building And Printing, a place that holds many special memories and achievements for a number of people, Advanceworx included. As Glasgow’s largest college and supported by great facilities, the college offers a number of courses through four schools: Built Environment; Communication and Media; Design; Food, Hospitality, Sport and Tourism.
After a number of discussions, it was decided that to coincide with the new college brand and offering, Advanceworx in partnership with the college students and Student Association principals would produce a magazine by students for students. Advanceworx’s role would be to design and manage the project, involving journalist students, along with those studying design. The principals of the magazine were to give all students a publication that would be of interest and inform of not only student matters but also current topics. It was also a great opportunity for all involved to experience working on a large scale live project.
Through extensive interviews, the decided strategy for the magazine was to make this the voice of those involved, for them to run the publication but for Advanceworx to bring our knowledge and experience, allowing a professional outcome to the project. It was decided that Advanceworx would produce all the creative element but students would work with our team to gain valuable knowledge of the process. Our lead was simple: “Let’s get creative”. We set out and achieved just that; creative design, creative content.
“What a joy”! We loved being involved with this project. Loved working with the students. Visually and strategically we were allowed to work with people with drive and passion to achieve. The process gave our people the chance to pass on knowledge, as well as maybe learning a few things! It was great to have been a part in what was a new and exciting time for a Metropolitan College. A new time, a new name and to some extent a new approach, but to us older, former students it will always be the Big Zippo. Take a look at the creative and see if you can see why it has that name?
